Year 11 Sport Studies pupils traded the classroom for the water, rapidly mastering new paddlesport skills and embodying Risedale’s BEST values during a kayaking challenge at Tees Barrage.
Year 11 pupils from Risedale School recently took to the water at the Tees Barrage International White Water Centre for an immersive kayaking experience (22nd–24th September). Tailored for pupils studying the Cambridge National qualification in Sport Studies, the trip provided vital practical assessment for their 'Increasing Awareness of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities' unit.
Working with expert instructors, pupils embraced an unfamiliar sport, showing impressive skill progression as they quickly mastered paddling techniques, balance control, and water safety. Throughout the sessions, pupils proudly demonstrated Risedale’s BEST values: showing RESPONSIBILITY with safety equipment, RESPECT for instructors and venue rules, RESILIENCE when tackling new challenges on the water, and strong RELATIONSHIPS through team coordination and mutual support.
Mr A Lawson, Head of PE, commented:
"This trip was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to put theory into practice. What stood out most was how quickly they adapted to a brand-new skill. Their confidence and technique improved immensely in just a few hours!"
"The cohort embodied our BEST values exceptionally well throughout the week. My thanks to the team at Tees Barrage for three brilliant sessions, and a special thank you to Mrs Porritt, Mrs Wharfe and Mrs Newall for accompanying the trips, taking the photos and supporting our pupils."
