Competition has been fierce at Risedale School after an inter-house challenge was launched for both pupils and staff to count their daily steps and, where possible within lockdown restrictions, get outside and increase their total steps by walking and running even further.

Competition has been fierce at Risedale School after an inter-house challenge was launched for both pupils and staff to count their daily steps and, where possible within lockdown restrictions, get outside and increase their total steps by walking and running even further.

In total 2,167,590 steps were recorded, equating to a staggering 768 miles! Turing House were the overall winners with the highest total of 640,963 steps. Everyone who entered was asked to complete a daily log of their steps and to provide evidence by taking a snapshot of their fitbit or step counter device.

House System Coordinator Aidan Hindhaugh said: “The ‘Step Count House Competition’ was a great way to promote health and wellbeing across the school and get everyone moving during lockdown. It's been fantastic witnessing both pupils and staff getting those steps in and representing their Houses with pride. To say there was some healthy rivalry would be understatement... and that was just the staff!”

Head of PE at Risedale Selina Brierley said: "What a fantastic effort from our pupils and staff, moving away from their computer screens and stepping out into the outside world. I'm sure all the steps have had a positive impact on their happiness and wellbeing, as well as their fitness. Great work everyone!"

Acting Deputy Headteacher Mrs Matthewman said: “It’s been such a positive experience for everyone who took part. There’s been a great buzz around school amongst staff and online with the children about how many steps they’ve been racking up. We’re all so excited for the pupils to be returning and the school opening properly again. I’m sure we will run the step challenge again as it was such a resounding success and look forward to all the other extra-curricular activities and competitions we can run once we’re fully out of lockdown.”
