27/03/2026 Alumni

From Catterick to Rome: A year of international success for Risedale alumnus and artist Bishwadhan Rai.

Following our alumni spotlight last year, Risedale School is thrilled to share the continued international success of former pupil Bishwadhan Rai (Class of 2011-2015).

Since graduating from the Royal Academy Schools in 2025—where he was awarded the RA School Dissertation Prize and the Almacantar Prize—Bish’s career has reached prestigious new heights. He recently completed a residency as the Sainsbury Scholar in Fine Arts at the British School at Rome, cementing his status as a rising star in the art world.

Career Highlights:

  • Awards: Recipient of the 2025 Patricia Turner Sculpture Award and the Salaman-Seelig Art Award.
  • Solo Exhibition: Bishwadhan is currently preparing for his solo exhibition, ‘Being There’, at the ZÉRUÌ gallery in London (24th March – 25th April 2026).
  • Giving Back: Alongside his practice, he has been sharing his expertise as a Guest Tutor at Newcastle University and Camberwell School of Art.

From his early days in Risedale’s Art Department to exhibiting at the BALTIC and the Royal Academy, Bish continues to inspire our current pupils.

Head of Art, Ms Westwood said: "Watching Bish’s journey from our classrooms to the international stage is incredibly moving. He proves that with passion and dedication, Risedale pupils can achieve anything."

We look forward to continuing to watch Bish’s career flourish on the global stage.
