Risedale friends complete charity hike in the Lakes

25/05/2022

On Saturday 21st May, two pupils from Risedale School completed a 20km charity hike in the Lake District raising money for Cancer Research UK.

Elliot Wells and Jack Weaver are both in Year 9 at Risedale and Elliot is currently working towards his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. As part of his award, Elliot decided to walk the Ullswater Way and close friend Jack joined him for the challenge.

Prior to the walk, Elliot set up a JustGiving fundraising page collecting donations for Cancer Research UK. A charity that is very close to Elliot's heart after losing his Auntie Katie to cancer earlier this year. Elliot’s original target was to raise £100 but to date, he has now raised over £550!

Elliot said,

“Pooley Bridge was my Auntie Katie's favourite place, so it seemed right to make that the starting point for our walk. I chose Cancer Research UK to raise funds in her memory for this well-deserving cause.”

The boys completed the hike in 5 hours climbing crags, scaling Gowbarrow Fell, taking in the sights of Aira Force Waterfall and finally ending their journey in Glenridding at the southern end of Ullswater.

Elliot’s Mum Sarah said,

”It was a pleasure for my hubby and me to accompany the boys on their hike of the Ullswater Way; primarily for Elliot’s DofE Bronze award, but it was also lovely to get away and have an adventure together.

“The boys were funny, kind, polite and above all, hilarious in the most beautiful way. They are wonderful young men who are a credit not only to myself and Jack’s parents but also to the school that nurtures them so well, I thank you all!“

DofE Leader and Senior Teacher at Risedale Mrs Hailwood said,

“It is wonderful to see two Risedale pupils showing such commitment and compassion towards helping others. DofE is all about pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, having adventures, creating memories, building resilience and developing useful skills along the way. Elliot and Jack have certainly embraced this over the weekend. Well done boys!”
