Risedale places reading at the centre of everything we do; and we encourage every student to read regularly both at school and at home. The library is a well-used and busy part of the College. Last year over 8,000 loans were issued to staff and students.
The library is a welcoming and vibrant space which stocks a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction resources. Students, as well as staff, are encouraged to suggest books for future purchase, to make sure the stock is relevant and interesting. All books are catalogued online and this can be accessed through SearchStar, using the computers in the library.
The library is open all day for use by classes and individual students. All year groups have an English lesson based in the library once a fortnight. Students are also welcome to use the facilities at break, lunch time and after school. As well as a study area, with tables and chairs, there are also 17 computers, which can be used for research and homework. There is a comfortable seating area in which to sit and read quietly. The library also has a selection of newspapers and magazines.
The librarian is on hand throughout the day to support students with book selection, as well as homework and research. The library is open four days a week after school for all students.
Lots of reading activities and competitions run in the library during the year to encourage reading for interest and pleasure. Students also help run the library through the Student Librarian system.
Accelerated Reader is a reading programme followed by all students at KS3. At Risedale we put literacy at the centre of the curriculum. We believe that students need to be confident, happy readers to succeed in school and in life. Students read for 20 minutes every day in school as well as additional time in English. Students also have a library lesson a week. Accelerated Reader tracks the students' progress through quizzing on books. Additionally, the students are tested 4 times a year to ensure that their reading age matches or exceeds their chronological age.
